Why our age differs

Official is US PG. We say 12+ because drunkenness, family cruelty, and talk of a shooting sit under the period look

Our take

East of Eden is a family drama about a son desperate for his father's approval. Rejection, sibling comparison, drinking, and the discovery of his mother's past do more damage than the brief fights. War deaths and a medical crisis bring further grief, while sex work is discussed in period language rather than shown. We put it at around US PG and up, with a parent nearby for the family conflict and shame.

Uplifting themes

The film keeps asking whether love can be offered after years of getting it wrong. Forgiveness and choosing to care are the point, not winning. Families who have a hard parent will recognise the wish to be seen People fail loudly, then some of them try again. Kindness shows up in small help, not speeches. The young man is messy, which is useful to talk about, not copy Wartime California, bean crops, and a family patterned on an old Bible story give teens something solid to ask about. It is a period piece with real feeling, not a textbook. A parent can fill in the history

Story (may spoil tone)

In the Salinas Valley in and around World War I, Cal Trask feels he must compete against overwhelming odds with his brother for the love of their father. Cal is frustrated at every turn, from his reaction to the war, how to get ahead in business and in life, and how to relate to his estranged mother.

A past shooting is talked through in plain words, and a drunk young man gets into fights. War deaths arrive by telegram rather than battle footage. The hits you feel most are the family ones, not a brawl on the street

Beer is ordered, cigarettes are lit, and a young man says he is going to get drunk, then does. Wine is pushed at him later. The drinking leads to fights, so it is not just a toast in the background

The household stays tense, with raised voices and a father who can freeze a room. A medical shock near the end will worry some kids. It is dread of people, not monsters

A father repeatedly favours one son and rejects the other. The emotional harm is sustained, even though the son is nearly grown and no beating is shown

Brother is set against brother, and the town has a harsh way of sorting who counts. The favored son is not cruel for sport, but the comparison itself grinds. Kids who know sibling rivalry will feel it

A doctor describes bleeding in the brain after a shock. A gun belongs to a story in the past, not a shootout. The harm is in the words more than in what the camera shows

Someone is called depressed and people try to cheer him. Shame and a hunger for approval run through the son who cannot get it right. It is mood and family weather, not a hospital story

Neighbors get the worst telegram of the war, and a father is left shaken by shock and illness. The sons are already living with a missing mother. Loss is spoken and felt, even when nobody stages a funeral

  • One brother seems to have the father's love already. What does that do to the other son?
  • When someone tries to buy affection with a gift, what are they really asking for?
