Our take

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is a darker fantasy sequel about a leader gathering followers through fear and prejudice. Magical fights kill people, children appear in painful memories, and a crowded rally carries a threatening political message. Language is mild, but the mood and violence are heavier than the early Hogwarts adventures. We put it at around 13 and up, with room to discuss how a charismatic leader exploits isolation.

Uplifting themes

Standing up for people with no magic is treated as the decent choice, even when a charming speaker says otherwise. Loyalty among friends gets tested on purpose. The film asks who you protect when a crowd wants a simple enemy Newt keeps choosing care for creatures and for friends over the loud cause. Other adults freeze, scheme, or hide. He is awkward and kind, which is a useful contrast to the rally

Story (may spoil tone)

Gellert Grindelwald has escaped imprisonment and has begun gathering followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one capable of putting a stop to him is the wizard he once called his closest friend, Albus Dumbledore. However, Dumbledore will need to seek help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Wizards talk openly about killing a rival, and later battles throw people through magic and fire. Followers are said to have already died. The duels are stylish, but the intent to end lives is not a side note

Hell pops up a couple of times when someone is lost or trying to leave. That is about as strong as the talk gets. Families used to the school films will not hear a new swear world

Adults carry old loves and new crushes, including a marriage under strain. A line about seducing someone sits inside a darker plot, not a bedroom scene. It stays at glances and ache

Strange beasts, a water demon, and a crowded dark rally keep the film in a low, uneasy key. People get framed as monsters for a political show. Younger Harry Potter fans may find this chapter colder than the classroom stories

School-age memories show children caught in adult cruelty, and younger characters get used in the present hunt. The peril is real, then the story swings back to the wider chase. Kids are not safely off to the side

Grindelwald argues that wizards should rule over others and rallies a crowd around that idea. His prejudice drives the conflict rather than appearing as a passing insult

A blood curse and a blood pact get named, and people die in magical bursts. You do not sit in wound detail. Wands and fire do the damage from a spectacle distance

An isolated young man is manipulated by adults who want his power. His anger and vulnerability make him easier to recruit

Family losses hang over several characters, including talk that someone is already dead. The sadness is part of why people choose sides. It is not a funeral film, but the ache is there

Talk after watching

  • A gifted speaker asks people to choose a side. How can you tell a rescue speech from a pitch for hate?
  • Friends keep secrets from each other to stay loyal to someone else. When is that protection, and when is it a betrayal?
