Our take

1917 stays close to two British soldiers crossing dangerous ground during the First World War. Bodies, a stabbing, gunfire, and ruined trenches make the journey frightening, while grief sits under the mission. Strong swearing is common; a mention of wine is minor by comparison. We put it at around MA 15+ and up, with a parent nearby for the war violence and loss.

Uplifting themes

Duty, loyalty, and keeping a promise under impossible pressure are the spine. The film respects the cost of that choice. Good fuel for a talk about courage that is not glamorous Young soldiers keep going for people they have never met. Officers are not painted as cartoon villains. Teens can still ask what fair leadership looks like in a crisis You get a ground-level sense of trench life, timing, and how messages moved in 1917. It is history through boots, not a textbook. Pair it with a map talk if kids ask

Story (may spoil tone)

At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers.

Soldiers talk about men already killed, then a stabbing and machine-gun fire push the danger onto the road. Rifles, flares, and ruined trenches stay in frame for a long stretch. It is war harm you feel in the body, not a quick montage

The f-word lands early and keeps coming under stress, with bloody, b-word, hell, and p-word-off snaps in the ranks. Swearing is thick when fear spikes. Teens will hear adult army talk all the way through

Someone mentions a bottle of wine along the way. It is a small beat, not a drinking story. Easy to miss if you are watching for the mission

Quiet ground turns deadly without much warning, and night stretches feel heavy with threat. Corpses and sudden attacks keep the nerves up. Sensitive teens may need a break after the credits

A stabbing wound and blood loss matter to the mission. Rifles and flares are used amid ruined trenches, with injury visible but not prolonged in close-up

Men talk about comrades already gone, and the mission is built around stopping more deaths. Loss sits under every mile. Families who know military grief may feel it harder

Talk after watching

  • The mission asks them to risk everything for men they may never meet. What would make that worth it for you?
  • The film shows how quickly a quiet stretch of ground can turn deadly. How do you talk about courage when you are scared?
