Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 14+ because parent feedback lands lower than the letter, though the child-in-violence theme still deserves a talk

Our take

Léon: The Professional follows Mathilda after corrupt agents kill her family and she turns to a hitman neighbour for help. Shootouts, deaths, strong swearing, and her exposure to the assassin's work are disturbing. The guide also flags an uncomfortable crush dynamic between the girl and the adult man. We put it at around 14 and up for the child peril, violence, and relationship boundary concerns.

Uplifting themes

Léon learns tenderness and Mathilda finds a surrogate family, yet revenge and murder remain the engine. Talk about what real healing would look like Léon shows care in his own stiff way, but he is still a killer and lets a child idolize him. Do not treat either as a template You could discuss how 1990s action framed lone avengers versus how law and support systems actually help grieving kids. Otherwise entertainment first

Story (may spoil tone)

Léon, the top hit man in New York, has earned a rep as an effective "cleaner". But when his next-door neighbors are wiped out by a loose-cannon DEA agent, he becomes the unwilling custodian of 12-year-old Mathilda. Before long, Mathilda's thoughts turn to revenge, and she considers following in Léon's footsteps.

Talk after watching

  • Mathilda wants revenge like an action hero. How is real gun violence different from what movies make look cool?
  • Why does the film's crush storyline between a child and a grown man feel wrong to many parents today?
