Our take

Five friends head to a remote cabin and end up in a horror story that knows the genre's tricks. The jokes do not make the monster attacks or the bloody final stretch mild. There is heavy swearing, drinking and pot smoking too. We would keep it for 16 and up

Uplifting themes

A thread about refusing to play along with what others expect of you sits under the jokes. Most of the film is a thrill ride, so a parent may need to draw the idea out Some friends try to protect each other and think for themselves under pressure. Others are selfish or careless, so nobody is really a model for kids to follow

Story (may spoil tone)

Five friends set out for a weekend at a remote cabin in the woods, expecting nothing more than fun and relaxation. As night falls, they discover that something far more unsettling is at work and that nothing about their getaway is what it seems.

Friends are hunted and killed by monsters, with stabbings, mauling, and gunfire. A big late sequence has many people killed in quick succession. Some of it plays for dark laughs, but the injuries are still harsh

The f-word is used constantly, along with the s-word, the a-word, and plenty of name-calling. It shows up in jokes, panic, and arguments alike, from the first scene to the last

Friends flirt, kiss and talk about sex. In one scene a woman is topless on top of a man while he removes her trousers; the scene strongly implies they are about to have sex. Another character makes out with a mounted animal head as a dare. The breast nudity and foreplay are more than passing innuendo

The group drinks beer and tequila and smokes pot through a good stretch of the film. The stoner character is a funny guide, and the use looks casual and fun

Jump scares, zombie attacks, and a constant feeling of being watched build for much of the runtime. Several creatures are grotesque, and the late sequences throw monster after monster at the viewer

Blood sprays, bodies are torn apart, and wounds show clearly during the monster attacks. The finale piles up corpses and gruesome creature designs
