Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 16+ because the killings are graphic and the sex-trafficking storyline is central. The f-word is also almost nonstop

Our take

A retired man steps in when a young woman is trapped by mobsters. The Equalizer makes his revenge look controlled and capable, but the killings are gruesome and the sex-trafficking story is grim. Strong swearing runs through the criminal scenes. We would keep it for 16 and up.

Uplifting themes

The story argues for protecting people who have nobody else. It also cheers on vigilante revenge, so the message needs a parent to talk it through The hero is kind to his coworkers and generous to a young woman he befriends. His answer to every serious problem is still lethal force

Story (may spoil tone)

McCall believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when he meets Teri, a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by – he has to help her. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem, if the odds are stacked against them, if they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.
