Official is PG. We say 10+ because the bullying is sustained and some fights hit hard. Younger kids may need a parent nearby

Our take

Daniel is bullied after moving to California, then finds a patient teacher in Mr. Miyagi. The Karate Kid is hopeful, but the repeated attacks and a painful tournament injury feel real even without graphic violence. A few swear words come up. We would watch together from 10.

Uplifting themes

Patience, balance, respect, and avoiding fights unless necessary are central ideas. Hard work is shown as the way to build skill and confidence Mr. Miyagi is a calm, kind mentor who teaches without showing off. Daniel starts out stubborn but learns humility, discipline, and respect for others Introduces martial-arts principles and some Japanese cultural touches, along with a hint of history from Mr. Miyagi's past. It is a drama first

Story (may spoil tone)

New Jersey teen Daniel LaRusso moves to Los Angeles with his mother, and soon strikes up a relationship with Ali. He quickly finds himself the target of bullying by a group of thugs, led by Ali's ex-boyfriend Johnny, who study karate at the Cobra Kai dojo under ruthless sensei John Kreese. Fortunately, Daniel befriends Mr. Miyagi, an unassuming repairman who just happens to be a martial arts master himself. Miyagi takes Daniel under his wing, training him in a more compassionate form of karate for self-defense and, later, preparing him to compete against the brutal Cobra Kai.

Gang members chase and beat Daniel in several scenes, and a Halloween attack leaves him bruised. The tournament has hard kicks, a knee injury, and teens fighting dirty. Some of it is sport, and some feels mean

Wine and beer show up in a few background scenes at dinners and parties. No one is shown getting drunk, and drinking stays in the background of the story

Cobra Kai students mock, chase, and attack Daniel for weeks, and their sensei pushes them to show no mercy. The film also shows Daniel finding courage and a respectful way to stand up to them

A few bloody noses and an injured knee are shown briefly during fights and the tournament. Nothing is graphic, but a hurt teen on the mat can still make younger kids wince

Kids may want to try kicks and moves on friends, and one sensei teaches students to strike to injure. A chat about martial arts rules could help

Mr. Miyagi carries a sad family loss from his past that comes up in a quiet, emotional scene. It is handled gently and gives his character depth

Talk after watching

  • Mr. Miyagi says karate is about discipline and not about fighting. Which of his lessons could help in real life with a bully?
  • The rival sensei teaches no mercy while Mr. Miyagi teaches balance. What does each approach say about winning?
