Our take

Gary poses as a hit man for the police and becomes involved with a woman who thinks he is the real thing. Hit Man is funny in places, but murder plans, strong swearing and their sexual relationship keep pulling it into adult territory. Suicide is discussed as a way to disguise a killing. We would watch from 16.

Uplifting themes

The film asks whether people can change and whether institutions should trap desperate clients. Honesty and empathy eventually matter more than the perfect sting Gary learns to assert himself without abandoning ethics, and Madison shows agency even when her choices are risky. A police mentor pushes back on lazy profiling

Story (may spoil tone)

A mild-mannered professor moonlighting as a fake hit man in police stings ignites a chain reaction of trouble when he falls for a potential client.

Gary and Madison talk frankly about good sex, fantasy, and jealousy, and intimacy grows between them. There is innuendo about going in naked to a meeting, but the focus is on chemistry and trust

Characters offer beer to celebrate or loosen up, and one plot beat mentions putting drugs in a man's drink as part of a scheme. Substance use is tied to cons and parties, not glamorised addiction

Sting scripts include faked suicide and robberies, and clients debate making a death look self-inflicted. These are criminal tactics discussed in police work, not encouragement

A police briefing lists a suspect as racist and misogynistic, framing bigotry as part of a criminal profile. It is brief and critical, not endorsed

Therapy is joked about and suggested when relationships spiral, treating counseling as a normal tool. Emotional control during sex is debated in academic language played for humour

Funerals and grieving widows come up as cover stories and moral tests during stings. Loss is used in the plot machinery more than as a family healing story

Talk after watching

  • Gary becomes different people for his sting work. When does playing a role help you grow, and when does it become lying to yourself?
  • Madison and Gary argue about trust while police pressure builds. How do you balance attraction with serious red flags?
