Our take

These frontier stories can be funny one minute and cruel the next. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs moves from comic gun duels to hangings, bloody attacks and losses that get little comfort. We would wait until 16 for the violence and the way the mood darkens as it goes.

Uplifting themes

Occasional kindness or justice flickers through the chapters, but the anthology mostly satirises greed, vanity, and violence. Do not look for a tidy moral at the end Few leads are admirable for long; even charming outlaws cheat or die. That is intentional, yet it leaves little for kids to imitate

Story (may spoil tone)

Vignettes weaving together the stories of six individuals in the old West at the end of the Civil War. Following the tales of a sharp-shooting songster, a wannabe bank robber, two weary traveling performers, a lone gold prospector, a woman traveling the West to an uncertain future, and a motley crew of strangers undertaking a carriage ride.

Talk after watching

  • Each chapter has a different moral tone, from silly to cruel. Which story stuck with you, and what do you think the filmmakers were saying about the Old West?
  • Humor often arrives right after something violent. How does that change the way you feel about the characters?
