Our take

This PG holiday comedy pits Vince Vaughn's slacker Fred against his saintly brother Nick at the North Pole. Slapstick snow fights and elf chaos stay cartoonish, with a few mild curses and a quick gambling gag in a flashback. Romance is limited to Fred's embarrassed stories. We land at 8 and up because the sibling jealousy and mild rude humor may bore very little kids but stay within family-comedy bounds

Uplifting themes

Family reconciliation and putting others before pride wrap the Christmas story. Fred learns his brother's work matters Nick stays patient with Fred's jealousy, and Fred slowly steps up for the elves. Even the efficiency expert learns kindness counts

Story (may spoil tone)

Fred Claus and Santa Claus have been estranged brothers for many years. Now Fred must reconcile his differences with his brother whom he believes overshadows him. When an efficiency expert assesses the workings at the North Pole and threatens to shut Santa down, Fred must help his brother to save Christmas.

Talk after watching

  • Fred feels invisible next to Nick. Have you ever been jealous of someone you still love?
  • The film asks whether Christmas is about magic or getting the job done. Which side do you think wins?
