Official Rating M ClearAge 15+

Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 15+ because frequent strong language and layered grief fit the M rating's not-under-15 guidance when several concern scores sit at 3 or 4

Our take

Ben becomes a carer for Trevor, and their trip gives them room to joke and to talk about what each has lost. The Fundamentals of Caring is warm in places, but the grief, strong language, smoking and frank sex jokes are adult. We would start at M.

Uplifting themes

Friendship, honesty, and showing up for someone who needs help win out. The journey earns its warmth Ben learns to listen; Trevor pushes for a fuller life. Side characters are messy but often kind

Story (may spoil tone)

Having suffered a tragedy, Ben becomes a caregiver to earn money. His first client, Trevor, is a hilarious 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralyzed emotionally, one paralyzed physically, Ben and Trevor hit the road on a trip into the western states. The folks they collect along the way will help them test their skills for surviving outside their calculated existence. Together, they come to understand the importance of hope and the necessity of true friendship.

Talk after watching

  • Ben and Trevor insult each other to avoid honest hurt. When does humor help grief, and when does it block it?
  • Trevor wants ordinary teen experiences despite his chair. What would real support look like on that trip?
