Why our age differs

Official is US PG. We say 12+ because rocket peril and a brief suicide mention sit heavier than a gentle family comedy

Our take

The Astronaut Farmer is a warm family story about a dad, a ranch, and a homemade spacecraft that worries the neighbours and the government. Mild swearing shows up as hell, damn, and a few stronger slips. A character mentions someone who died by suicide in passing, and the launch sequences carry real danger for the family watching. Kids on the ranch help with the project and feel the stress when things go wrong. We land at US PG and up because the peril and that dark mention sit above a pure kids' adventure

Uplifting themes

Dreams, grit, and taking responsibility for the people who rely on you are the film's clear through-line. It cheers persistence without pretending risk is free Charles loves his kids and keeps working the land while chasing space. His wife and children show loyalty, even when they are scared

Story (may spoil tone)

Texan Charles Farmer left the Air Force as a young man to save the family ranch when his dad died. Like most American ranchers, he owes his bank. Unlike most, he's an astrophysicist with a rocket in his barn - one he's built and wants to take into space. It's his dream. The FBI puts him under surveillance when he tries to buy rocket fuel, and the FAA stalls him when he files a flight plan – but Charles is undeterred.

A homemade rocket and talk of fuel look exciting on screen. Younger viewers may need a clear talk that this is movie fantasy, not a backyard project

The father's choice to stay on the ranch after losing his own dad still echoes. Family worry during the mission adds emotional weight

Talk after watching

  • Charles keeps building even when banks and agencies say stop. When is persistence brave, and when is it unfair to the people who love you?
  • The whole family shares the dream and the risk. How should parents include kids in big plans without putting them in harm's way?
