Our take

50 First Dates is a broad Adam Sandler romance built on Lucy's short-term memory loss after an accident. Expect sex jokes, condom talk, and crude banter, plus weed and drinking gags among friends. Language lands at hell, damn, the s-word, b-word, and a-word more than a flood of f-words. We land at 13 and up because the adult humour sits inside an otherwise warm love story

Uplifting themes

Showing up, patience, and choosing love even when it is hard win out over easy flings. Family support also matters for Lucy's care Henry grows from a commitment-averse player into someone reliable. Early womanising is the problem the story asks him to leave behind

Story (may spoil tone)

Henry is a player skilled at seducing women. But when this veterinarian meets Lucy, a girl with a quirky problem when it comes to total recall, he realizes it's possible to fall in love all over again…and again, and again. That's because the delightful Lucy has no short-term memory, so Henry must woo her day after day until he finally sweeps her off her feet.

Lucy's daily memory reset after a brain injury shapes every relationship choice. The film stays comic but still asks what care looks like with a lasting condition

Talk after watching

  • Henry chooses to earn Lucy's trust again every day. What does lasting commitment look like when it takes real work?
  • The film treats a brain injury with comedy. How can humour and respect for disability sit together?
