Why our age differs

Official is US R. We say 16+ because frequent strong language, murderous obsession, and on-screen danger to a child push past a soft restricted floor

Our take

The Fan is a sweaty crime thriller about a salesman whose love for a star baseball player slides into stalking and violence. Strong language is constant, and the story builds toward murder threats that put a child in real danger. Alcohol and workplace rage sit beside stadium crowds and knife-edge obsession. We land at 16 and up because the mix of fixation, killing, and child peril needs older teens with a parent nearby

Uplifting themes

Protecting family and refusing to feed a dangerous fantasy flicker through. Most of the film is a warning, not a uplift The player fights to keep his child safe under crushing pressure from a stalker. Many adults around him miss early warning signs

Story (may spoil tone)

When the San Francisco Giants pay center-fielder, Bobby Rayburn $40 million to lead their team to the World Series, no one is happier or more supportive than #1 fan, Gil Renard. When Rayburn becomes mired in the worst slump of his career, the obsessed Renard decides to stop at nothing to help his idol regain his former glory—not even murder.

Fixation, rage, and a collapsing sense of self drive the lead's choices. The film sits with unhealthy obsession more than therapy talk

Talk after watching

  • What is the line between being a big fan and treating a stranger like they owe you something?
  • A child becomes a target in an adult's obsession. How would you talk about asking for help early when someone's behaviour feels off?
