Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 15+ because claustrophobic dread, crew killings, and suicide-risk talk push this past a lighter sci-fi adventure

Our take

Sunshine is a tense space thriller that mixes hard science talk with claustrophobia, burns, and crew conflict. Strong language is frequent under pressure, and characters discuss suicide risk after a crisis. Violence turns personal in the later stretch, with deaths that land hard. We land at M and up because sustained dread, injury, and self-harm talk need older teens

Uplifting themes

Sacrifice and duty for Earth’s future still flicker through the fear. Cooperation matters until trust fractures and each choice costs someone Some crew keep trying to protect the mission and each other under impossible odds. Others collapse into rage or obsession when hope thins

Story (may spoil tone)

Fifty years into the future, the sun is dying, and Earth is threatened by arctic temperatures. A team of astronauts is sent to revive the Sun — but the mission fails. Seven years later, a new team is sent to finish the mission as mankind’s last hope.

Isolation and guilt push people toward breakdown under mission pressure. The film treats psychological strain as part of survival, not a side joke

Talk after watching

  • The crew argues over who lives if resources run out. How would you decide fairly when every option costs someone?
  • Someone is flagged as a suicide risk after a mistake. What support would you want a friend to give in that moment?
