View all categoriesOur take
Star Trek is a fast space adventure with phaser battles, fist fights, and a planet's destruction. Parents die, but the action is largely bloodless and the film keeps an adventurous spirit. Language is mild, with some social drinking and a bar brawl. A creature forced into a captive's mouth and monsters chasing a crewman are the sharpest scares. We put it at around 13 and up.
Uplifting themes
Duty, courage, and teamwork sit at the center, as rivals learn to trust each other and put the crew first. Believing in yourself and finding your place run throughout Kirk and Spock both grow from reckless or rigid into leaders who listen and work together. Mentors like Pike model steadiness and belief in young people There is a light science and space-exploration flavor, and a strong thread about prejudice and belonging that is worth talking over afterward
Story (may spoil tone)
The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk, is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock, a Vulcan, was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before. The human adventure has begun again.

Loss drives a lot of the story, from a father dying minutes after his son is born to a mother and a home world lost. Those moments carry real weight
