Why our age differs

Official is M. We land a touch higher at 14 because of a brief but real suicide moment in the opening, on top of heavy monster-fight destruction. There is very little blood

Our take

This Marvel outing follows scientist Bruce Banner as he hides from the military and fights to control the raging giant he becomes. The mood is tense and often sad, with big destructive battles and a scary monster in the finale. There is scattered swearing, mild romantic tension, and a brief, non-graphic moment early on where Bruce nearly ends his own life before the Hulk stops him. Blood is kept low despite the heavy action. Teens will cope better than younger comic-book fans, who may find the darker beats heavy

Uplifting themes

At its core this is about a man trying to control his anger instead of letting it hurt people, and about protecting someone he loves. Self-control and restraint are the goals he keeps reaching for Banner is gentle and careful when he is himself, choosing to run instead of fight. Betty is calm and brave, though the people chasing him blur the line between duty and cruelty

Story (may spoil tone)

Scientist Bruce Banner scours the planet for an antidote to the unbridled force of rage within him: the Hulk. But when the military masterminds who dream of exploiting his powers force him back to civilization, he finds himself coming face to face with a new, deadly foe.

Banner is hunted by the army, and the clashes get big, from a campus rampage to a city-wrecking brawl with a monstrous foe. It is loud and destructive, though blood and wounds stay minimal

Coarse language is scattered but noticeable, with the s-word, a-word, and b-word turning up alongside milder hell and damn. It fits an older-kids action film without becoming constant

Bruce and Betty clearly still care for each other, and one tender moment is cut short because getting worked up is dangerous for him. There is no nudity and nothing explicit, just adult romantic tension

Alcohol barely registers here, with just a passing line about the smell of stale beer in a bar. Nothing is glamorised, and no character is actually shown getting drunk

The transformation into the Hulk is intense, and the final enemy is a hulking, grotesque creature that chases people through the streets. Younger or sensitive kids may find the size, roaring, and monster design genuinely scary

An early montage shows Bruce at his lowest, including a brief moment where he nearly takes his own life before the transformation stops him. It passes quickly and is not graphic, but the despair is real

Soldiers use heavy weapons and sonic cannons, and people are hurt or killed in the chaos. Talk of blood and gamma experiments comes up, but the film keeps graphic injury off the screen

Talk after watching

  • Bruce treats the Hulk as something to control, not unleash. How do you talk with your kids about managing big anger?
  • The army sees Bruce as a weapon to capture. What makes someone cross from doing their job into doing harm?
