Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 13+ because the swearing and adult jokes stay mild beside a warm cooking story, without the sustained bite of a harder M drama

Our take

Julie & Julia is a bright cooking drama that cuts between Julia Child learning French cuisine and Julie Powell blogging her way through the cookbook. Mild-to-moderate swearing appears, including one clear f-word, plus frank sex jokes and plenty of wine with dinner. A suicide in someone's family history lands as a sad shock in conversation. We land at 13 and up because the adult language and emotional bumps make this a lighter teen drama, despite a few adult moments

Uplifting themes

Passion, practice, and supporting each other through failure make ordinary days feel bigger. Both women learn that courage can look like picking up a whisk again Julia and Julie chase hard skills with humour and grit, and their partners mostly cheer them on. Mentors and friends show how collaboration beats gatekeeping French cooking technique, publishing hurdles, and the early food-blog era come through in concrete kitchen detail. Curious teens can pick up history with the recipes

Story (may spoil tone)

Julia Child and Julie Powell – both of whom wrote memoirs – find their lives intertwined. Though separated by time and space, both women are at loose ends... until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

Family illness and a sudden death cast shadows across the cooking triumphs. Grief is handled with warmth and does not swallow the whole film
