Our take

A PG A24 fantasy about a village girl who befriends a forest creature hunted by her community. Violence includes teens shooting at animals, traps and scary creatures with large teeth; one ochi has a bloody leg wound. Smoking appears in period village life. Tone is darker than typical PG fare. Best for about 11 and up; sensitive younger kids may need company.

Uplifting themes

Compassion, curiosity and mending family bonds drive the adventure Yuri keeps her integrity by protecting the ochi despite community pressure Themes about coexistence with nature and questioning fear-based traditions come through

Story (may spoil tone)

In a remote village on the island of Carpathia, a shy farm girl named Yuri is raised to fear an elusive animal species known as ochi. But when Yuri discovers a wounded baby ochi has been left behind, she escapes on a quest to bring him home.
