Our take

This big-screen Jack Ryan outing keeps the Prime Video series' M edge and is rated M for violence and language. Executions, throat-slitting, headshots, car bombs and dozens of deaths span London and beyond. Strong profanity runs through nearly every tense scene, while sex and nudity stay off-screen. Teens who know the show may recognise the tone, but the body count and bleak spy-war themes suit mature viewers only.

Uplifting themes

Loyalty, teamwork and standing up to corruption appear, although the tone stays cynical about institutions Ryan and Greer try to act with conscience, although the mission still rewards lethal force and secrecy Touches on intelligence oversight and post-9/11 covert history, mostly as thriller backdrop

Story (may spoil tone)

Jack Ryan is reluctantly pulled back into espionage when an international covert mission unravels a deadly conspiracy. Racing against time, he joins CIA allies Mike November & James Greer and sharp MI6 officer Emma Marlowe to battle a rogue black-ops unit in a high-stakes, deeply personal fight.

Talk after watching

  • Jack Ryan keeps trying to do the right thing inside a world of covert ops and moral grey zones — where do you draw the line between protecting your country and breaking the rules?
  • Greer and Ryan argue about past black-ops programs like Starling. How do governments decide what stays secret, and who pays the price when those secrets come back?
