Our take

Mickey 17 is a Bong Joon Ho sci-fi satire about a disposable worker who dies and is cloned for dangerous jobs on an ice planet. It is rated R for violence, language, and some sexual content. Expect graphic death cycles, alien creatures, workplace cruelty, and near-constant f-word dialogue. Best for older teens who handle dark comedy and body horror

Uplifting themes

Survival and questioning unjust systems emerge amid bleak satire Mickey shows persistence, though the colony leadership is largely cruel

Story (may spoil tone)

Unlikely hero Mickey Barnes finds himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.

Talk after watching

  • Mickey's job treats people as replaceable. How do we talk about worker dignity and fair treatment?
  • Sci-fi clones raise big ethics questions. If a copy has your memories, is it still you?
