Our take

A photorealistic animated prequel about young Mufasa's journey to kingship. Rated PG for peril, violence and thematic elements. Predator attacks, floods, sibling rivalry and dialogue references to death and patricide appear, though blood stays minimal. Fine for elementary-age kids who handled the 2019 remake.

Uplifting themes

Leadership, unity and protecting the circle of life are recurring themes Mufasa models courage, humility and loyalty on his path to becoming king

Story (may spoil tone)

Mufasa, a cub lost and alone, meets a sympathetic lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of a group of misfits searching for their destiny.
