Our take

Look Back follows two schoolgirls bound by comics, then jumps years later into a cruel attack. You get a first-kiss comic title, a killing aimed at art students, and grief that does not let go. Fine for 13+ who can handle a sudden, sad turn. Sensitive kids should skip the later stretch

Story (may spoil tone)

Popular, outgoing Fujino is celebrated by her classmates for her funny comics in the class newspaper. One day, her teacher asks her to share the space with Kyomoto, a truant recluse whose beautiful artwork sparks a competitive fervor in Fujino. What starts as jealousy transforms when Fujino realizes their shared passion for drawing.

Talk after watching

  • One girl hides at home. What does friendship look like when someone will not come out?
  • Drawing is how they talk. What happens when that is taken away?
