Our take

College friends on a Hawaiian vacation watch a beloved pet chimp turn rabid and hunt them. The MA 15+ covers strong bloody violence, gore, language and some drug use. Johannes Roberts goes explicit with chimp kills, glass injuries, pool traps, hangover beer and many f-words. People compare it to Cujo, and animal lovers may find Ben's rampage hard to sit with. Horror fans around sixteen can weigh it; younger kids who know chimps as pets should skip

Uplifting themes

Loyalty to Ben complicates the horror even while people fight to survive. Family feeling flickers under the attacks. Warmth is scarce once the blood starts

Story (may spoil tone)

College student Lucy and her friends spend their vacation at her family's home in Hawaii, which includes her pet chimpanzee, Ben. However, when Ben contracts rabies after being bitten by a rabid animal, the group must fight for their lives in order to avoid the now-violent chimp.

The rabid chimp mauls people through the night. Stabbings, pool-side kills, face and jaw trauma and brick smashing keep it graphic and sustained. This is top-end animal-attack violence

People scream and swear through the chimp attacks without much pause. Many f-words land in the panic, plus s-word, b-word, g-word and ass when things get bloody

Flirting and kissing show up among the friends, with some graphic sex talk in the banter. No explicit sex scene. The talk is cruder than the action

College drinking, hangover beer and pot smoking sit in the vacation vibe. One character gets drunk and vomits. Intoxication is part of the weekend, not a cameo

Ben stalks the house like a Cujo-style pet gone wrong. Animal shrieks, a pool trap and survival scrambling keep the tension high. Relentless more than jump-scare cute

Blood and wounds are shown in detail, including face and jaw trauma and glass injuries. It gets extreme for creature horror. Injury detail is not soft-pedaled

A parent's cancer death is mentioned in the backstory. It is a passing beat, not the engine of the plot. Still there for families listening closely

Talk after watching

  • Ben was part of the family before rabies changed him. How does the film treat animal victims?
  • The friends hide in a pool because chimps avoid water. What survival tricks feel smart versus silly?
