Twelve Monkeys is a dark science-fiction thriller with a disorienting story and an adult tone. Psychiatric hospital scenes, fears of catastrophe, and a hero unsure of his own mind create sustained unease. There is scattered strong language, some bloody violence, brief nudity, and heavy mental-health themes. We put it at 16 and up; younger viewers may also struggle with its bleak, complex plot.
Uplifting themes
Buried in the bleakness are ideas about fate, trying to save others, and holding onto love in a hopeless world. The takeaways are more thought provoking than comforting The leads are sympathetic but damaged, a troubled prisoner and a doctor pulled into his story. There are no clean role models here, which fits the grim, adult tone
Story (may spoil tone)
In the year 2035, convict James Cole reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to discover the origin of a deadly virus that wiped out nearly all of the earth's population and forced the survivors into underground communities. But when Cole is mistakenly sent to 1990 instead of 1996, he's arrested and locked up in a mental hospital. There he meets psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly and the son of a famous virus expert who may hold the key to the Army of the 12 Monkeys; thought to be responsible for unleashing the killer disease.
