Why our age differs

Official here is MA 15+. We say 17 because images of dead children and wartime bodies, plus heavy mental-illness themes, make it a harder watch than the rating alone suggests.

Our take

Shutter Island is a psychological thriller steeped in dread, grief, and uncertain memories. War flashbacks show piles of corpses, and the story returns to the deaths of children and a man's severe mental illness. Its bursts of violence are bloody and upsetting, and there is strong language. The mood is intense enough to linger after the film ends. We put it at 17 and up.

Uplifting themes

The film has real compassion for broken people and asks hard questions about guilt and memory, though it offers little comfort. The value is in the conversation it starts There are few clear role models in this uneasy world, which suits its tone. Some characters show care for the suffering, but motives stay murky throughout It opens doors to talk about trauma, wartime history and how we treat mental illness, for viewers who are old enough. It is a drama, not a documentary

Story (may spoil tone)

World War II soldier-turned-U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels investigates the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane, but his efforts are compromised by troubling visions and a mysterious doctor.

Talk after watching

  • The film plays with what is real and what the mind invents. How did that change the way you read the ending?
  • It deals with grief and mental illness head on. How does your family want to talk about those?
