Our take

This is a full-blooded supernatural horror made to frighten, driven by relentless dread, loud jump scares and demonic possession. The family's children are terrorised, a possessed mother turns on her own child, and the backstory refers to past suicides and a shooting. Blood and injury do turn up, though the real force here is sustained terror far more than gore. Restricted viewing for older teens who seek out horror, and stronger with company in the room.

Uplifting themes

Beneath the scares, the film is about a family, and those who come to help them, refusing to give up on one another. Faith, courage and love are what hold the line against the terror The investigators and the parents are brave and fiercely protective, placing themselves between the children and the danger. Their loyalty holds firm even when they are clearly frightened

Story (may spoil tone)

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

A possessed mother turns on her family, there is a frantic struggle to hold her down, and dialogue recounts a man who shot his wife and then himself. What plays out on screen is forceful without being especially bloody

In the scariest moments frightened characters let out the s-word, hell and damn. It reads as fear talking in the moment, never a steady stream of coarse banter

Horror fills this one end to end, between the creeping sense of threat, the sudden shocks and the terrifying possession scenes. It is built to frighten and will be far too intense for younger viewers

More than once the backstory mentions characters who took their own lives, among them a tragic figure bound up with the haunting. These stay as spoken references, with no method shown

The entity stalks, grabs and badly frightens the family's children, and a possessed mother tries to harm her own child. The minors are in sustained, serious danger for much of the film

There is blood, a gun and talk of a shooting, plus a range of injuries caused by the haunting. Wounds do show, but the film leans on fear well ahead of graphic detail

Talk after watching

  • Horror films like this trade on sudden scares and dread. What helps your teen wind down after watching something this intense?
  • The story is sold as based on real events. How do you tell apart what really happened from what was made scarier for the film?
