Our take

A landmark of suspense, this black-and-white thriller works through slow dread and shock far more than blood. Two sudden, violent killings arrive, among them the famous shower stabbing, along with a startling late reveal and a grim corpse. By modern standards the blood stays restrained, and the real force is psychological. Its scares and dark themes suit teens from around 13 who enjoy old-school suspense.

Uplifting themes

Uplift is thin on the ground here, with suspense and unease doing the pulling. Still, a couple of characters press on to uncover the truth and shield someone they love A worried sister and a dogged investigator each try hard to do the right thing, yet this stays a dark story with no clear heroes for kids to look up to

Story (may spoil tone)

When larcenous real estate clerk Marion Crane goes on the lam with a wad of cash and hopes of starting a new life, she ends up at the notorious Bates Motel, where manager Norman Bates cares for his housebound mother.

The opening scene shows an unmarried couple together in a hotel room, the woman in her underwear, as they talk about their affair. A shower appears with no explicit nudity on show. It all stays mild and brief

From the isolated motel to a chilling reveal near the close, the film holds a genuinely tense, unsettling grip. A grim, preserved corpse and the feeling of a hidden watcher lend it a real menace that stays with you

A past death gets a passing mention, described as both a murder and a suicide, with no further detail given. It amounts to a single line of dialogue, nothing more

Both killings use a knife, and the blood that shows reads dark against the black-and-white photography. A body or two appears, including one disturbing discovery, though injury detail stays limited

A character's serious psychological illness is the hinge of the whole story, spelled out at length by a doctor near the end. The way it is handled feels very much of its era

Talk after watching

  • Psycho scared audiences without showing very much at all. What makes the shower scene frightening even now?
  • The film treats mental illness as a twist and a threat. How does that compare with how we talk about it today?
