Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 8+ because the nighttime chaos, a charging dinosaur skeleton, and fierce warriors can be a lot for younger children. Older kids will mostly find it exciting fun

Our take

A bright family adventure comedy, this follows a down-on-his-luck dad whose new museum job descends into chaos when the exhibits wake after dark. The action is silly, slapstick stuff, taking in cavemen, Roman soldiers, a Hun army and a charging dinosaur skeleton, all without real blood or harm. The language stays very mild and a sweet father-son thread runs underneath. There is lots of fun for families, though the dark, noisy museum and a few fierce faces may rattle under-7s.

Uplifting themes

At its heart the film is about a dad trying to do right by his son and learning to see something difficult through. It cheers on curiosity, responsibility and refusing to give up Larry shifts from a flaky dreamer into someone dependable and brave, with figures like Teddy Roosevelt nudging him to find his courage. In the end it is good teamwork that wins the night Through its museum setting the film brushes against real history, from Roosevelt and Sacagawea to Attila, Columbus and ancient Rome. Curious kids may well head off to learn more

Story (may spoil tone)

Chaos reigns at the natural history museum when night watchman Larry Daley accidentally stirs up an ancient curse, awakening Attila the Hun, an army of gladiators, a Tyrannosaurus rex and other exhibits.

Once the exhibits wake, they set off plenty of comic mayhem, as Huns, Roman soldiers, cowboys and cavemen scuffle and chase the guard about. It is broad slapstick, with no injuries or blood

Language is very gentle throughout, with just the odd mild word such as hell and a few cartoonish insults. Nothing stronger surfaces across all the museum chaos

Larry develops a gentle crush as he warms to a friendly museum guide, and there is one cheeky kiss-up joke. It stays sweet and in the background, never going past a little flirting

A towering dinosaur skeleton gives chase, Attila the Hun cuts a fierce figure, and the vast, dark museum feels spooky after hours. It is all in good fun, yet the louder, scarier beats may be much for very young children
