Why our age differs

Official is M, often read as an M steer. We say 10 because the fighting is stylised and bloodless, the swearing is very mild, and the tone stays comic.

Our take

This Marvel adventure sends a boastful warrior god to Earth to learn humility after he reignites an old war. The mood is grand and comic, mixing cosmic battles with fish-out-of-water laughs. There is steady fantasy fighting with hammers and energy weapons, some scary creatures, a sweet low-key romance, and a few scenes of adults drinking. Swearing is very mild and there is almost no blood. Older kids around 10 who like big superhero action usually handle it fine

Uplifting themes

The story is really about an arrogant prince learning humility, sacrifice, and what makes someone worthy of trust. Owning your mistakes and protecting others carry real weight by the end Thor starts out cocky and hot-headed, then grows into someone who puts others first. Jane is a smart, driven scientist, and the film rewards patience and courage over brute pride

Story (may spoil tone)

Against his father Odin's will, The Mighty Thor - a powerful but arrogant warrior god - recklessly reignites an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Thor charges into fantasy battles with the Frost Giants, duels enemy warriors, and faces a towering Destroyer that blasts a town. The fighting is near constant but stylised, with hammer blows and energy beams instead of blood

Coarse language is very light for the genre. The strongest moment is a single use of the word b-word, and there is little else beyond that across the whole film

The romance between Thor and scientist Jane stays sweet and slow, built on glances and a hand kiss. There is no sex or nudity, just a gentle attraction that never really takes off

Thor hits a bar and knocks back drinks like a warrior, and there is a comic morning-after when he takes a friend out drinking. The tone is light, but adults are shown getting drunk

The blue-skinned Frost Giants, a huge horned ice beast, and the faceless Destroyer can be unsettling for younger children. The scares come from scale and strange creatures more than shocks, and they pass fairly quickly

Swords, energy weapons, guns, and the famous hammer all see use, and characters die in the clashes. The violence is bloodless, so there are no real wounds or gore to speak of
