Our take

This sequel mixes big, colourful space action with crude jokes and a lot of heart about family and belonging. It is funnier and more sentimental than it first looks, building to an emotional story about fathers, loss, and who we choose as family. There is plenty of comic violence, frequent mild swearing, and a sad on-screen death of a parent early on. A few darker turns and a space funeral give it real weight. It fits early teens who enjoyed the first film

Uplifting themes

At its warm centre is a story about found family, forgiveness, and the difference between the father you get and the people who truly raise you. Sacrifice and loyalty win out in the end The team are rude and reckless but fiercely loyal, and one gruff figure finds real redemption. Their growth and care for each other model loyalty, even wrapped in constant bickering

Story (may spoil tone)

The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage.

Space battles, blasters, and a lot of kill talk run through the film, including one stylised scene where a character wipes out a whole crew. It is comic-book action with little blood. The hits are frequent but rarely graphic

Swearing is frequent if mostly mild, loads of hell and damn, with scattered s-words, a-words, and a son of a b. It gives the film a cheeky, grown-up edge throughout

Jokes nod to flirting, and there is a frank line about romantic, sexual love when an empath reads feelings. It stays verbal and cheeky, with no nudity or sex scenes

Characters drink, song lyrics mention whiskey and wine, and someone admits to saying something while drunk. It is casual bar-and-party stuff, never a real focus

A reference to a childhood abduction and some looming, otherworldly menace give a couple of darker beats. The scares stay mild for the genre. Younger viewers may feel the tension in the big finale

Guns and blasters are everywhere and plenty of characters die, though it is bloodless and often played for laughs. There are joky references to grisly injury that never actually land on screen

The film opens with Peter's mother dying in hospital, a tender and sad moment, and closes on a heartfelt funeral. Loss and goodbye sit right at its core. Those scenes carry real emotional weight
