Why our age differs

Official is US PG-13 in the US. We say 13 because the brothel murder-revenge plot is grim and adult, even as a short

Our take

DC Showcase: Jonah Hex is a brief, adult-leaning Western short. A disfigured bounty hunter goes after a brothel madame who murdered his quarry. There is killing, coarse talk, drinking, and a seedy setting that is not meant for little kids. It is over fast, which helps, but the tone is ugly on purpose. We put this at 13, with a parent, because the brothel revenge plot is a teen-and-up sit even at short length.

Uplifting themes

There is little uplift: this is a revenge loop. At most, it shows a man refusing to let a murder slide. Families will get more from asking whether payback helped anyone Jonah is a brutal hunter, not a guide for kids. The madame is a killer. Treat the short as a mood piece, not a hero lesson. Keep that in mind when you pick a night for it

Story (may spoil tone)

When a ruthless brothel madame murders Jonah Hex's current quarry, the disfigured bounty hunter plans to make her pay.

Jonah hunts and kills his way through a revenge job after a murder in a brothel. Gunplay and frontier brutality are the point of the short. It is over quickly, but the intent is lethal, not slapstick

Damn, hell, and rough Western talk fit Jonah’s voice. The short does not have time for a torrent of swearing. The tone is still coarse. Worth remembering when you pick a night for it

The plot is set around a brothel and a madame’s business, so sex work is the backdrop. It is seedy, not explicit. Parents should know the setting is adult even if the runtime is tiny

Drinking is part of the frontier texture, including a line about being too drunk. Nobody is teaching kids to drink. It marks a worn, adult world

Jonah’s scarred face, a murder, and a revenge hunt give a grim, mean atmosphere. It is short enough that the dread does not linger for long. Still a cold sit for younger kids

Guns and talk of guts sit in the bounty-hunter job. Injury is suggested more than lingered on. Weapons are how the short solves every problem

Talk after watching

  • Jonah’s whole life is payback. What does the short say about people who only know how to hunt?
  • The story sits in a brothel. Why might a filmmaker choose that setting for a ten-minute revenge tale?
