Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 16 because the nudity, slow grim mood, and brutal fighting sit together for a long runtime.

Our take

This is a long, moody science-fiction sequel, set in a grim future Los Angeles. The pace is slow and the mood is heavy. You get bursts of brutal fighting, shootings, and a few bloody moments. There is strong sexual content, including full nudity, and a scene where a hologram and a woman stand in for one partner. Scattered strong language runs through it. The weight and the adult content make this one for teens 16 and up.

Uplifting themes

Underneath the noir, the film asks what makes a life matter and lands on choosing others over yourself. One character gives up a great deal for someone else's sake. There is real heart in a cold world The lead grows from a quiet enforcer into someone who acts on conscience, not just orders. Loyalty and sacrifice shine through by the end. Most adults around him, though, are harder to admire

Story (may spoil tone)

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Fights turn brutal, with shootings, a drowning struggle, and a woman knifed soon after she is created. The violence is spread across the long runtime and some of it feels cold and deliberate. A few blows are sudden and heavy

Strong language shows up now and then, with the f-word and s-word among the sharper lines. It is not a constant stream, but it is clearly adult. There is also a contemptuous slur aimed at the replicants

Sexual content is strong here. There is full nudity, including giant naked holograms, and a scene where a hologram overlays a real woman so two partners blur into one. The tone is moody, and it is still clearly adult

Characters drink whiskey and smoke through some of the quieter scenes. It sits in the noir backdrop and is never the point. Nothing is glamorised, but it is a regular part of this adult world

The future here is bleak and oppressive, full of dead cities, fog, and looming machines. A birth scene and the quiet menace of the villain build a steady unease more than quick scares. Younger viewers may find the whole mood a lot to sit with

A grim orphanage puts children to work stripping scrap in a crowded, unsafe hall. The scene is brief but bleak, and the kids there look worn down. It passes quickly without direct harm shown

Replicants are treated as less than human throughout, insulted and ordered around as property. One slur captures the open contempt they live with. It is baked into how the world works, quiet but constant

There are corpses, bullet wounds, and one close stabbing that draws real blood. Weapons are realistic and used without ceremony. The gore is not constant, but a couple of moments are pointed and grim

Loss sits under the whole story, from a long-dead love to the ache of people searching for who they belong to. One reunion carries real sorrow. The feeling is quiet and grown-up, more ache than tears

  • The film keeps asking what makes someone truly alive. How would your family answer that?
  • K is told what to feel and who he is. When is it worth questioning the story you have been given?
