Our take

The Godfather Part II is a slow-burning crime story about power, loyalty, and what both cost a family. The killings are spread across its long runtime but hit hard, including shootings, a strangling, and gunfire into a family home. There is strong language, brief nudity in a brothel, and a sad death late in the film. Its pace and adult themes make it a better fit for older teens and adults.

Uplifting themes

Loyalty and family matter deeply here, but the film shows how those ideals curdle into control and betrayal. The takeaway is a cautionary one worth talking through Few characters are worth copying, and that is the point. Young Vito's loyalty and restraint stand out against Michael's cold descent into power There is a vivid sense of early-century immigrant New York and mid-century America, useful for history-minded viewers. It is drama first, not a textbook

Story (may spoil tone)

In the continuing saga of the Corleone crime family, a young Vito Corleone grows up in Sicily and in 1910s New York. In the 1950s, Michael Corleone attempts to expand the family business into Las Vegas, Hollywood and Cuba.

Talk after watching

  • The family justifies terrible choices as loyalty and business. Where should loyalty stop?
  • Power keeps costing Michael the people closest to him. What does the film say about that trade?
