View all categoriesOur take
Inside Man is a tense bank-hostage thriller with guns held on people for long stretches. The f-word is frequent, hostages are made to strip to underwear, and a Sikh man faces ugly racial profiling after his release. Bloodshed is limited beside the constant threat. We put it at around 17 and up for the language, coercion, and discrimination.
Uplifting themes
Smart patience, protecting civilians, and exposing rot in high places get some credit. The film enjoys the cat-and-mouse game. Still room to talk about power and prejudice A weary detective tries to keep people alive while politics swirl around him. He is flawed and under pressure. Better as a talk about duty than a clean hero template Teens may ask how hostage talks and bank security really work. Spike Lee also puts bias on screen in blunt ways. Popcorn crime first, civics second
Story (may spoil tone)
When an armed, masked gang enter a Manhattan bank, lock the doors and take hostages, the detective assigned to effect their release enters negotiations preoccupied with corruption charges he is facing.

Talk after watching
- The robbers stay calm while the city panics. What is the difference between clever and cruel?
- A man is mistreated because of how he looks. How would you want a bystander to respond?
