Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 8+ because the cartoon action and a couple of big, loud set-pieces suit school-age kids more than toddlers

Our take

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation sends its friendly monsters on a colourful cruise. Most scares are gentle, but a giant sea creature and a stormy finale become loud enough to startle very young viewers. Dracula has a sweet romance with kissing, and cocktails sit in the holiday background. Language is very mild. Most primary-age children should be comfortable with a parent nearby.

Uplifting themes

Family, loyalty and looking past old prejudice are front and centre. The monsters and humans learn to accept each other, and Mavis wants her dad to find happiness Dracula is a devoted dad and Mavis is caring, though both stumble into fibs and control along the way. The mix gives families something to talk through

Story (may spoil tone)

Dracula, Mavis, Johnny and the rest of the Drac Pack take a vacation on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship, where Dracula falls in love with the ship’s captain, Ericka, who’s secretly a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing, the notorious monster slayer.

The old human-versus-monster grudge drives the plot, and one character wants monsters gone for good. The story firmly argues for acceptance and seeing past differences
