View all categoriesOur take
This is a big, noisy robots-versus-robots action movie that runs very long and rarely slows down. There is heavy sci-fi combat, lots of gunfire, buildings coming down, and humans threatened and killed, though the carnage is mostly bloodless metal mayhem. The language is frequent, with moderate swearing and a single harsh word, and there is a running gag about a teenage daughter dating an older boyfriend. We land at M and up for the length, the pounding intensity, and the language. Younger kids will find it a lot to sit through.
Uplifting themes
Family loyalty and protecting the people you love drive the heroes, human and robot alike. It is a simple, repeated message running under all the noise Cade is a devoted, if overprotective, dad, and Optimus holds a line about not killing humans. They are decent anchors in a chaotic film, even when the noise takes over
Story (may spoil tone)
As humanity picks up the pieces after the battle of Chicago, a shadowy group reveals itself in an attempt to control the direction of history…while an ancient, powerful new menace sets Earth in its crosshairs. With help from Cade Yeager, Optimus Prime and the Autobots rise to meet their most fearsome challenge yet.

Robot-on-robot fighting runs through the whole film, alongside gun battles, explosions, and people chased by killer machines. Humans are shot at and some are killed, though it stays bloodless. The sheer amount of it is the main thing

Swearing is frequent, mostly the s-word plus a lot of name-calling like son of a b-word and b-word. There is one harsh f-word late on. It is more than a sprinkle but never a steady barrage

The content is mild, with a teen girl in short shorts and a running joke about her older boyfriend and the age-of-consent law. There is some innuendo but nothing explicit

A gag robot keeps fetching beer, and adults drink socially here and there. It is light and comic, and none of it is dwelt on, just a running gag

Giant machines, a relentless alien bounty hunter, and city-levelling set-pieces keep the tension high and loud. One man is vaporised on screen, and children and teens are put in real danger. Smaller kids may find the scale overwhelming

Cade's teenage daughter is repeatedly held at gunpoint and threatened, and the family is hunted for much of the story. She is always rescued, but the menace toward her is real. It is a recurring source of tension

Guns are everywhere and people die, including humans disintegrated into ash or metal by alien weapons. The style keeps blood to a minimum. The threat stays constant even when the detail is not graphic

There is a lot of reckless driving, crashing, and weapon handling amid the chaos. It reads as fantasy spectacle, not a how-to, but it is wall to wall

Cade is a widower raising his daughter alone, and his late wife is mentioned as part of why he is so protective. The theme sits quietly in the background

Talk after watching
- The movie shrugs off huge destruction without showing much cost. Does non-stop action like this make danger feel too easy?
- A grown man dates Cade's teenage daughter, and the film jokes about it. What did you make of how that was handled?
