Our take

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brings the heroes into a noisy citywide battle with guns, an armoured villain, and a poison threat. The comic-book fights are frequent, but blood and language stay mild. There is a little flirting and a gentle thread about a lost parent. We put it at around 11 and up for children comfortable with large-scale action.

Uplifting themes

At heart this is about found family, teamwork and loyalty, with the brothers covering for each other through every scrape. Those themes come through clearly between the explosions The turtles bicker but protect one another, and their mentor pushes patience and discipline. They solve most problems by fighting, so the teamwork matters more than the method

Story (may spoil tone)

When a kingpin threatens New York City, a group of mutated turtle warriors must emerge from the shadows to protect their home.

There is near-constant comic-book action, with ninja fights, guns, falls and a villain in a bladed metal suit. It is loud and stylised more than bloody, but the fighting and threats to kill carry real menace in places

Language is mild overall, with a scattering of words like damn and one use of the s-word. It fits the loud, jokey tone and never piles up into a barrage

There is some light ogling and a couple of cheeky comments aimed at the human lead. It is brief and played for laughs, with nothing beyond mild flirting

The mutant designs, a towering armoured villain and a plan to poison the whole city can be a lot for younger children. The scares are blockbuster-sized more than genuinely dark, but little ones may find parts tense

Guns are drawn and fired, and the plot hinges on draining the turtles' blood, so there is menace around weapons and injury. Actual gore is minimal, with the danger kept broad and action-driven

The ninja moves, large jumps, and fight stunts may tempt young fans to reenact them. A reminder that the acrobatics are movie tricks may help

April's late father is part of the backstory. His loss gives the adventure a gentle emotional thread without showing his death

Talk after watching

  • The turtles argue but always have each other's backs. What makes their teamwork work?
  • The heroes fix almost everything by fighting. When is that the right answer, and when is it not?
