Our take

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a darker second year at Hogwarts. A monster stalks the school, a student is taken, and the long spider sequence in the forest may frighten children. Prejudice about bloodlines is spoken openly, while young characters do most of the rescuing. We put it at around 9 and up, with a parent nearby for the scarier stretches.

Uplifting themes

Standing up for people who get called names, and walking into danger for a friend, sit at the heart of the year. Courage is ordinary kids refusing to look away. Loyalty gets them through Harry, Ron, and Hermione keep choosing each other when the school turns ugly. A few adults help, and a few let them down. The trio's stubborn kindness is the model worth talking about Blood prejudice is a clear stand-in for racism, and families can name that after the film. It is still an adventure first. The talk about who belongs is the useful bit

Story (may spoil tone)

Cars fly, trees fight back, and a mysterious house-elf comes to warn Harry Potter at the start of his second year at Hogwarts. Adventure and danger await when bloody writing on a wall announces: The Chamber Of Secrets Has Been Opened. To save Hogwarts will require all of Harry, Ron and Hermione's magical abilities and courage.

A killer tree batters a flying car, a giant snake hunts children, and a diary tries to finish a job started years ago. Spells fly in a duelling club. The magic fights feel punishing this year

Bloody hell and damn pop out when the car crashes or something jumps in the dark. The swearing stays in that mild British register. The monster will bother kids long before the words do

Petrified students, a bloody warning, giant spiders, and a serpent beneath the school build scares through the second half. The spider sequence is especially long

Students are found petrified, and one girl is taken into a hidden chamber. Other children go after the monster with little adult help

A slur about blood status is used against students, and Malfoy repeats the prejudice. Other characters challenge it, but it is part of the plot

A warning is daubed in blood, a cat is found stiff, and fangs do real damage in the last fight. The aftermath sits in shot more than open wounds. It is grim for a family film

A flying car, a sneaking club, and a potion that copies another person's face will look like a dare to some kids. It is story magic. Still worth saying those stunts stay in the film

A ghost girl talks about dying young in the school toilets, and Harry still carries the loss of his parents. The sadness is quieter than the monster hunt. Some children will ask about that ghost

Talk after watching

  • A slur about blood is used to hurt classmates. How would your child want a friend to answer that?
  • Kids go after a monster with almost no adult backup. When is bravery wise, and when is it too much to carry?
