Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 13+ because the scares stay fantasy-led, blood is scarce, and the adventure tone is lighter than a harder M

Our take

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a creature-filled fantasy adventure with collapsing streets and a darker force threatening the city. Language is mild, and flirting and drinking are brief. One young person lives under harsh control at home, which may upset children more than the magical fights. We put it at around 10 and up, with a parent nearby for the scarier scenes.

Uplifting themes

Caring for misunderstood creatures and choosing mercy over fear give the adventure a warm spine. Friendship across odd pairs matters. Kindness looks practical, not preachy Newt protects beasts and people with patience, and allies risk their standing to do the right thing. They stumble and argue. Courage still looks like sticking with the vulnerable 1920s New York, magical law, and debates about fear of the other give families a light after-film chat. History is painted with fantasy. Curious teens will spot the parallels

Story (may spoil tone)

In 1926, Newt Scamander arrives at the Magical Congress of the United States of America with a magically expanded briefcase, which houses a number of dangerous creatures and their habitats. When the creatures escape from the briefcase, it sends the American wizarding authorities after Newt, and threatens to strain even further the state of magical and non-magical relations.

Outsiders and No-Maj tensions simmer, and characters worry about being bullied or hunted for who they are. Prejudice against the different fuels conflict. It is clear without filling every scene

A parent names a son killed by the destructive force, and loss hangs over the hunt for answers. The mourning is brief on screen. Death still has a human cost inside the spectacle
