Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 12+ because the ghost jokes and sandworm scares play for laughs more than cruelty, and that is where a parent watch sits

Our take

Beetlejuice is a ghost comedy about a dead couple whose chaotic helper turns their haunting into a bigger mess. Strange transformations, sandworms, and afterlife imagery are played for laughs, but they can unsettle younger children. The title character brings strong language and sexual innuendo. We put it at around M and up for viewers comfortable with macabre comedy.

Uplifting themes

Found connection across the living and the dead, and a teen who trusts her own sight, give the chaos a soft centre. Greed and showboating look foolish. Kindness is quieter than the gags, but it is there The dead couple try to protect their home without becoming cruel, and Lydia keeps a clear moral compass amid adult nonsense. The title pest is the opposite of a model. Good behaviour shows up in the quieter characters

Story (may spoil tone)

A newly dead New England couple seeks help from a deranged demon exorcist to scare an affluent New York family out of their home.

A couple dies in a comic accident, and later schemes involve threats to kill, possess, or scare people out of a house. The hits are gag-led more than bloody. Impact stays cartoonish inside the afterlife chaos

Dialogue includes the s-word, hell, damn, a-word, and at least one f-word tossed as an insult. Swearing spikes around irritation and the title pest's energy. It is moderate, not a constant barrage

The chaotic ghost makes crude romantic and sexual jokes, including talk of a reunion with him. There is no explicit sex scene. Innuendo is part of his comic menace

A song line about drinking wine floats through a late musical beat. Social drinking never becomes a plot engine. Alcohol stays in the background of the comedy

Ghosts, possession, sandworms, and grotesque afterlife faces may scare younger viewers even when the film is joking. The imagery can linger longer than the gags

A teenage girl befriends ghosts and becomes caught in Beetlejuice's schemes. The danger is fantastical, but adults leave her to face much of it

Death and afterlife bodies are part of the joke, and someone talks about spilling guts in a figurative line. There is little realistic wound detail. The ick is Halloween makeup more than crime-scene gore

Characters mention seeing a therapist when family stress piles up. The film does not dig into a diagnosis. Therapy is a brief adult aside inside the ghost comedy

Death, funerals, and mourning language run through a story about people who have already died. The tone stays comic, yet loss is the starting point. Some kids will still ask soft questions after

Talk after watching

  • Lydia sees ghosts when the adults around her will not listen. When should grown-ups take a young person's worries seriously?
  • The film jokes about death and the afterlife. What felt funny to your teen, and what felt uneasy?
