Our take

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice brings three generations of the Deetz family back to the haunted house and the afterlife. You get spooky comedy, cartoonish gore, talk of funerals and ghosts, and some mild to moderate language. A teenager is part of the story. Frightening for sensitive tweens, fine for most 13+ viewers who liked the first film

Uplifting themes

Family members try, messily, to show up for one another after a loss

Story (may spoil tone)

After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Betelgeuse, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife.

  • The family is still dealing with a death. How does humour sit next to grief?
  • Lydia tries to protect her daughter from the afterlife. When should parents share scary family history?
