Our take

Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy about a woman facing her partner's wealthy, disapproving family. Kissing and talk of an affair are mild on screen, while one f-word, party drinking, class snobbery, and a bloody fish left as a warning give it sharper edges. The social cruelty can sting more than the physical threat. We put it at around 13 and up, with room to discuss family pressure and belonging.

Uplifting themes

Choosing a person over a family's script is the heart of it. Friends show up, and pride in Chinese family life is allowed to be warm, not only glossy. The film argues that love and respect have to run both ways The visiting professor keeps her work and her spine. Cousins and a loud best friend model loyalty that is funny and practical. Parents can point to people who tell the truth even when it costs them a seat at the table Singapore's mix of languages, food, and family duty is on show, and so is the gap between Asian-American life and old-money Asia. Teens can ask what belonging actually requires. It is a rom-com, not a lecture

Story (may spoil tone)

An American-born Chinese economics professor accompanies her boyfriend to Singapore for his best friend's wedding, only to get thrust into the lives of Asia's rich and famous.

A gutted fish is left as a warning, which is nasty more than a fight. A family story mentions a shooting in the past, and a toy-like knife-gun is a gag in a car. You are not watching a brawl movie; you are watching a threat dressed as a gift

One f-word lands, plus the s-word, a-word, and a lot of b-word teasing among friends. It clusters at parties more than at the dinner table. Younger ears will still catch the sharp ones

Kisses are warm and on screen, and an affair is talked about in a marriage that is already under strain. Nobody strips for the camera. Teens will understand the adult plot without seeing a sex scene

Beer is praised at a stag do, and some guests are clearly drunk. Champagne and family toasts fill the richer rooms. It is party drinking, not a story about addiction

The scare is social: walking into a room that has already decided you do not belong. The fish warning is ugly for a second. Sensitive kids may feel the embarrassment more than any shock

Wealthy relatives and acquaintances judge Rachel by class, family background, and whether she belongs. The social exclusion is central to the film and is eventually challenged

The gutted fish is bloody in a kitchen-sink way, meant to disgust. A knife-gun joke and old family talk of a shot are the rest. No wound close-ups on people

Clothes, jewellery, and looking the part at a wedding carry a lot of weight. The film also enjoys food and family tables. It is status dressing more than a diet plot

A father who died in China is spoken about, and that absence still shapes a mother's fear. It is a quiet beat, not a funeral film. Kids who have lost a grandparent may feel it

Talk after watching

  • When a family measures people by money and schooling, what gets missed?
  • If you loved someone whose relatives disapproved, what would you need from them?
