Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 10+ because traffic stunts and kids-in-jeopardy pranks feel sharper than a soft PG sitcom

Our take

Are We There Yet? is a road-trip comedy in which children keep undermining a would-be stepfather. Traffic mishaps, pranks, and a kidnapping scare bring child peril, though serious injuries are not flagged. Swearing is mild and the romance includes kissing and suggestive jokes. We put it at around 10 and up, with a parent nearby to discuss the risky stunts.

Uplifting themes

Blended-family patience and sticking with kids through mess eventually surface. Pranks dominate early. Payoff is gentle, not deep Nick keeps showing up despite sabotage, and the kids learn he is not the villain they imagined. Adults also lie and bicker. Mixed bag for imitating Geography of the drive is backdrop only. Family negotiation is the real lesson if you talk it through. Otherwise thin

Story (may spoil tone)

The fledgling romance between Nick, a playboy bachelor, and Suzanne, a divorced mother of two, is threatened by a particularly harrowing New Years Eve. When Suzanne's work keeps her in Vancouver for the holiday, Nick offers to bring her kids to the city from Portland, Oregon. The kids, who have never liked any of the men their mom dates, are determined to turn the trip into a nightmare for Nick.

Therapist and depression get tossed into teasing dialogue between adults. It is not a mental-health plot. Mention passes fast

Talk after watching

  • The kids try to wreck Nick's trip on purpose. Where is the line between funny and cruel?
  • When adults argue about dating, what do the children actually hear and feel?
