Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 17+ because the nested story's assault and revenge killings are sustained and graphic in tone, beyond a typical MA 15+ drama

Our take

Nocturnal Animals moves between an art-world marriage and the violent story in a manuscript. The story within the film includes a family's roadside attack, sexual violence, and revenge shootings. Nudity, an affair, and strong language add to the adult tone. We put it at around 17 and up because the assault and its aftermath are central and difficult to shake off

Uplifting themes

A faint caution about choices and cruelty, but the runtime dwells in payback and hollow success. Thin uplift Almost everyone is compromised. Do not look here for steady moral guides

Story (may spoil tone)

Susan Morrow receives a book manuscript from her ex-husband – a man she left 20 years earlier – asking for her opinion of his writing. As she reads, she is drawn into the fictional life of Tony Hastings, a mathematics professor whose family vacation turns violent.

Loss and what-might-have-been grief echo through the exes' history and the manuscript's body count. Mourning sits beside anger
