Hillbilly Elegy is a heavy family drama that cuts between a young man's elite-school present and a childhood shaped by addiction and explosive household fights. The tone is raw and upsetting more than gently nostalgic. Strong language is frequent, mostly the f-word, alongside heroin overdose talk, drunken rage, and scenes where a child fears his mother will kill him. We land at MA 15+ and up because substance abuse and on-screen child peril sit at the centre
Uplifting themes
Education, responsibility, and a tough grandmother's love offer a path out without pretending the past disappears. Second chances cost work Mamaw's fierce protectiveness and the lead's push to finish school model grit. Other adults fail in ways the film does not soft-pedal
Story (may spoil tone)
An urgent phone call pulls a Yale Law student back to his Ohio hometown, where he reflects on three generations of family history and his own future.
