Our take

A washed-up radical and his teen daughter move through violent pasts and present-day chases in Paul Thomas Anderson's long political thriller. The M rating covers pervasive language, violence, sexual content and drug use, including disturbing sexual behavior and a teen girl in peril. Reviews praise the craft but warn it is loud, bloody and emotionally heavy. Strictly for mature older teens and adults.

Uplifting themes

Father-daughter loyalty and anti-fascist ideals appear amid chaos The daughter shows grit; adult mentors are deeply flawed

Story (may spoil tone)

Washed-up revolutionary Bob exists in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited, self-reliant daughter, Willa. When his evil nemesis resurfaces after 16 years and she goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her, father and daughter both battling the consequences of his past.
