Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 12+ because disaster deaths are steady and claustrophobic, even though gore stays relatively light for the genre

Our take

A wave overturns a cruise ship, leaving a small group fighting its way through water, fire and wreckage. Poseidon gives them little time to breathe, and several people die along the way. Blood is limited, but the peril rarely lets up. We would start at M.

Uplifting themes

Expect strong language in several life-or-death choices, including Teamwork and protecting weaker passengers. Selfish characters are shown as risky when water rises in the hull The lead group shares water and tries to bring others along when they can. Some authority figures fail, which the film treats as a lesson

Story (may spoil tone)

A packed cruise ship traveling the Atlantic is hit and overturned by a massive wave, compelling the passengers to begin a dramatic fight for their lives.

Champagne and wine flow at the New Year's party before the wave hits the ship. Drinking is not glorified after the capsize, when survival takes over

Dark flooded corridors, roaring fire, and near-drowning repeat for most of the runtime. Jump-scare moments are less common than sustained dread

Characters improvise climbs through air shafts and underwater swims that look heroic on film. Use it to talk about real ship safety, not copycat stunts

Survivors leave friends and strangers behind, and a few quiet beats mourn people who did not make it. The pace keeps grief brief

Talk after watching

  • Different passengers choose escape routes and who to help. What would you prioritize in a crisis: family, strangers, or your own survival?
  • The film shows luxury turning useless in an instant. How does that change how you think about safety drills and listening to crew instructions?
