Our take

Robin Williams plays a comic who wins an election he never expected to win. Much of the content is in jokes about sex, drugs and politics rather than action. We would start at 13 for a teen who can follow the satire and the sharper language.

Uplifting themes

Honesty, civic duty, and questioning spin get real airtime. The film wants viewers to care about democracy beyond the punchlines Ellie pushes for doing the right thing when the easy path is silence about the glitch. Tom is charming and flawed, learning what honesty costs in public

Story (may spoil tone)

The irreverent host of a political satire talk show decides to run for president to mock the political system and expose corruption in Washington. What begins as a publicity stunt quickly gathers unexpected momentum as his message resonates with frustrated voters.

Corporate villains lean on intimidation, including an abduction scare tied to covering up the vote error. Tension is thriller-lite inside a comedy

Talk after watching

  • A comedian suddenly holds real power. What skills from entertainment help in public life, and what skills are missing?
  • Characters argue about telling the truth when a mistake could upend an election. When is honesty more important than stability?
