Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 16+ because sexual assault is on screen and hate-driven gun violence makes this harder than a standard restricted teen drama

Our take

Higher Learning is a heavy campus drama about race, power, and belonging in the first year of college. Strong language runs through dorm fights and political arguments, and there are clear sexual assault and coercion scenes. Guns, beatings, and hate-driven attacks raise the stakes late. We land at 16 and up because the assault content and hate-driven violence need older teens with a parent nearby

Uplifting themes

Education, solidarity, and speaking up against hate still matter. Characters argue for dignity even when the campus feels unsafe Mentors and peers who choose study and solidarity offer a counterweight to the agitators. Not every adult in authority helps A blunt look at how race, class, and consent collide in late-90s college life, useful for older teens ready to talk about campus safety

Story (may spoil tone)

African-American student Malik is on a track scholarship; academics are not his strong suit, and he goes in thinking that his athletic abilities will earn him a free ride through college. Fudge, a "professional student" who has been at Columbus for six years so far, becomes friendly with Malik and challenges his views about race and politics in America.
